Scallops, Scapa, Subs and Spoons…

July has been a rather hectic month at DLL, we’ve been to Swanage, Weymouth , Portland, Chepstow and of course Wraysbury. In between all that we’ve somehow managed to find the time to teach 60 cadets to dive.

The weather on the south coast has been fantastic and we’ve enjoyed flat calm seas especially when some of us managed to head down to Weymouth to dive the submarine wreck of the M2 last week, great viz and a successful scallop catching session saw us back at the pub in the evening cooking up a bit of a storm. Special mention here should go to Richard who completed his Advanced course in Stoney at the beginning of the year and has then gone on to dive in just about every spare minute of his time. Although Richard has almost completed his DM I’m beginning to think we may have to resurrect the ‘Underwater Hunter specialty’ given the hauls he manages to come back with!

For anyone who’s interested, catching scallops or crabs is a fun part of UK diving and something that you can try with our ‘catch n cook’ weekends. Catching by hand is the most sustainable way to collect scallops, much better than destructive dredging techniques and we only take what we’ll eat and throw back any excess or undersized individuals. If you want to find out more just email or call us.

Last weekend had some more diving down at Portland and also an advanced course at Chepstow. The heat was incredible and I don’t think we’ve ever been more grateful to get in the water! Viz was excellent and we had a great trip. Congratulations to Claire and Linda for completing the course and also to Dominic for slumming it in one of the nicest BnBs I’ve ever stayed in.

Next stop is Scapa (still some last minute space if anyone would like to come) and then Plymouth on the 16th and 17th. Have a look at the trips section for more info.
