The perfect UK dive trip?

This was the question on everyone’s lips at the end of one of the best weekends of UK diving I’ve done for many a year.

Firstly, the weather, oh the weather: Even if we’d done some sacrifices to the weather god (and I did) we couldn’t have got better conditions for the trip. Over the 3 days we enjoyed cloudless blue skies, calm millpond waters and little wind. The pink heads and panda eyes in the pub were a testament to the grand folly of forgetting your sun cream on day one!

Secondly the water wasn’t too cold and the viz was good. We completed 6 dives on a variety of wrecks and drifts. There was lots to see, loads of Pollack (which they ran out of in the chippie – very disappointing), plenty of large crabs, dogfish, rays, a couple of free swimming conger eels and of course scallops some of which ended up in the frying pan with a little butter and garlic….

The wrecks in Falmouth are better than I remember, the Mohegan was a great dive with it’s huge boilers concealing congers and attracting plenty of fish. The other revelation was the wreck of the Hera. This sits in only 16m of beautiful clear water. There are a couple of great swim-throughs and the wreck teems with life. It was a fantastic dive to round the trip off.

Thirdly we had an absolutely first class group of people on the trip, everyone enjoyed themselves and threw themselves into the diving, helping each other out on the boat and enjoying a few beers down the pub. This culminated in a night of crazed dancing which is probably best left on tour….

Special congratulations go to Sheila, Fergal, Clare and Juliette who were all diving in UK seas for the first time, especially Juliette who suffered from a drysuit determined to let in water, the undignified attempts to find the leak are there for all to see on facebook:

Our impeccable timing with the weather was proved when the heavens opened as we loaded up to head home on Monday.

So in conclusion was this the perfect UK dive trip? Sadly the no show of the basking sharks meant the answer has to be no. I think they got an email telling them I was en route and vacated the area. Still there’s always next year!
